Member of the House of Representatives representing Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency in Sokoto State, Abdussamad Dasuki, has reiterated the need for transition from the current presidential system to the parliamentary system of government.
Dasuki noted that the presidential system is synonymous with wielding power to the President, and as such, breeds corruption.
The federal lawmaker stated this on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s programme, Inside Sources with Laolu Akande.
Mid-February, about 60 members of the Green Chamber demanded amendments to the 1999 Constitution to transition from the current presidential system to the parliamentary system of government.
Led by a lawmaker representing Lagos State under the All Progressives Congress, Wale Raji, the lawmakers, who belong to different party affiliations, identified the need for reducing the cost of government, and robust policy debates among others as some of the reasons for demanding a return to the parliamentary system.
Titled, ‘The Bills proposing constitutional alterations for a transition to parliamentary system of government,’ the bill was sponsored by the House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, and 59 others and read for the first time on the floor of the House during Wednesday’s plenary session in Abuja.
The call for transition has drawn comments from notable personalities, with some in support and others on the opposite end.
The lawmaker added that the parliamentary system would ensure the availability of elected government officials to the needs of the citizens.
He also stated that the sponsors of the Bill are seeking that the parliamentary system kickstarts in 2027 across the presidential, governorship and LG elections.
