The Senate has urged the Federal Government to follow due process in the proposed scrapping of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB). The move aims to cut governance costs by implementing the Steve Oronsaye committee report, which recommends merging ministries and agencies.
During a debate on Tuesday, Senator Ogoshi Onawo highlighted that a presidential committee led by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has begun implementing the report without consulting the National Assembly.
The Senate argues this violates the NFVCB Act and insists the legislature should have input.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio cautioned his colleagues, stating there’s no concrete evidence linking Akume’s directive to the Oronsaye report.
The Senate advised
halting the NFVCB’s dissolution until proper legislative procedures are followed.
