In a tragic turn of events within the Edo State Police Command, Inspector Jonathan Okouromi has been accused of fatally shooting Sergeant Abosele Akhere during an operation in the Ikponwosa/Egban community, Egor Local Government Area.

The incident unfolded around 9 pm on Sunday, as operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Squad and the Control Intelligence Rapid Response Squad targeted suspected cultists causing unrest in the community.

Sergeant Akhere, having successfully apprehended a notorious cultist named ‘Raggae,’ tragically became a victim himself when Inspector Okouromi, for reasons yet unknown, fired a fatal shot from behind.

Eyewitnesses recount the sudden and seemingly unprovoked act, leading to Akhere’s severe injury and subsequent loss of life.

Despite immediate efforts to transport the injured officer to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, his death was confirmed by the attending doctor.

In an unexpected turn, Inspector Okouromi reportedly fled the scene with his firearm upon realizing the gravity of his actions. Simultaneously, the arrested cult suspect, ‘Reggae,’ managed to escape. However, another individual, Mr. Agbontaen Monday, a member of the Eiye confraternity, was successfully apprehended.

The police are actively conducting a search for Inspector Okouromi, who remains at large, while Sergeant Akhere’s body has been deposited at the mortuary for further investigation.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Edo State, Chidi Nwabuzor, currently on holiday, has indicated that details will be provided upon his return to the office.

This distressing incident adds to a series of unfortunate events within law enforcement, underscoring the challenges faced by those entrusted with maintaining public safety.
