On Monday, residents of Sokoto took to the streets to protest against the skyrocketing cost of living in Nigeria. According to reports gathered by news men, the protesters marched from Tudun Wada area of the state capital to the Government House, voicing their grievances.

Carrying placards and chanting slogans such as “Beans is expensive” and “Fuel is expensive,” the protesters highlighted the challenges faced by Nigerians amidst inflation and economic hardships exacerbated by the removal of fuel subsidies in May last year.

The prices of essential goods and commodities have surged, further straining the already fragile economy. The depreciation of the country’s currency, the naira, has also worsened, with $1 now exchanging for N1,500.

Last week, similar protests erupted in Niger and Kano states, while the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) issued a two-week ultimatum to the federal government to implement policies alleviating the suffering of Nigerians.

Abdullahi Muhammad, a protester leading the demonstration, expressed frustration over the deteriorating situation, calling for price controls to stabilize commodity prices. He criticized traders for hoarding goods and arbitrarily increasing prices, urging the government to enhance supervision of businesses.

Jabir Usman, another protester, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the exorbitant prices of basic commodities like garri and maize flour, attributing part of the problem to traders’ practices of price manipulation.

The protests underscore the urgent need for government intervention to mitigate the adverse effects of inflation and economic challenges on the populace.
