Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Soludo has called on the Federal Government to take urgent action to curb the influx of counterfeit drugs into the country.
His appeal follows alarming discoveries in Onitsha’s markets, particularly the notorious Ọgbọ Ogwụ market, where regulators recently uncovered large quantities of falsified and banned drugs.
Soludo strthatessed the need for stricter control of the supply chain where these dangerous products are first smuggled into the country.
The governor disclosed this in a statement on X on Sunday, following his visit to Onitsha on Saturday to inspect the Ọgbọ Ogwụ market and the nearby Plumbing Materials Market, which was recently shut down by regulatory authorities.
Soludo noted that several shops were found to be harbouring cartons of counterfeit drugs, many of which had been banned both locally and globally.
Soludo added that he has directed that the search in the markets be expedited so that traders at the Plumbing Materials Market can be allowed to reopen and resume their legitimate commercial activities within 10 days.
