At the South-East Zonal Public Hearing on the 1999 Constitution Review in Enugu, leaders and stakeholders from the region demanded major constitutional reforms.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, represented by Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, advocated for a rotational presidency among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to ensure fairness and national unity. He also called for full autonomy of local governments and an end to caretaker committees appointed by state governors.
The region proposed additional reserved legislative seats for women to boost gender inclusion. Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State urged the creation of an additional state in the South-East to achieve parity with other zones.
Traditional rulers, civil society, and NGOs also attended the hearing.
