The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced an increase in passport fees, effective September 1st, 2024.
Explaining the reasons for the increment on Saturday, the Public Relations Unit of the NIS, in a post on the Service official X account, stated that the hike is intended to improve the quality and standard of Nigerian passports, address rising production costs, enhance service delivery, and support the government’s local content agenda.
The NIS stated that the new fees will enable the creation of more passport offices and biometric centers, easing congestion at existing locations and reducing turnaround time for passport issuance. The move has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians criticizing the lack of empathy over the price hike.
The NIS encourages applicants to use the automated payment platform on its official website for a smooth application process.
