President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE, Mr. Eze Anaba, Trustee of Diamond Awards for Media Excellence, DAME, Mr Lanre Idowu and the UNICEF Nigeria Country Representative, Cristian Munduate have signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding, MoU in Abuja.
As a signatory to the UNCRC, Nigeria commits to uphold and protect the rights of children in the country. The convention covers a wide range of rights for children, including the right to life, education, health, protection from violence and exploitation, and participation in decision-making processes.
Nigeria has also integrated the principles and provisions of the convention into its family law framework and other relevant legislation. One of the key pieces of legislation that reflects Nigeria’s commitment to child rights is the Child Rights Act.
A press statement by UNICEF explained that the MOU was to leverage the influential power of the media to promote and protect children’s rights across Nigeria.
The MOU also seeks to support advocacy and awareness campaigns, provide capacity building for journalists, facilitate shared research, recognise impactful media contributions, and influence policy to support children’s rights.
