The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, is urging member states to fulfill their financial commitments to global peacekeeping. Speaking Tuesday at a ministerial conference in Berlin, Guterres stressed that peacekeeping operations are only as strong as countries’ support.
With 11 ongoing missions and a $5.6 billion budget, down over 8% from last year, the UN is facing serious liquidity challenges. Guterres called the operations cost-effective, but warned delays in payments threaten their success.
Germany says it’s willing to pledge more funds, but also called for more efficient, streamlined peacekeeping missions.
