U.S. President Joe Biden has applauded a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, assuring continued support for Israel’s militarily.
Biden said this in remarks at the White House in Washington, DC as Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire proposal by Egypt, which took effect on Friday.
Noting that the United States supports Israel’s right to defend itself against indiscriminate rocket attacks by Hamas, Biden decried that the hostilities had resulted in the tragic death of so many civilians, including children, sending condolences to all the families, Israeli and Palestinian, who lost loved ones.
Speaking further, Biden said he had spoken with Egypt President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas as part of an intense diplomatic engagement.
He added that the U.S. would work with the UN and other international organizations; in full partnership with the Palestinian Authority, to provide rapid humanitarian assistance for the people of Gaza, adding that Palestinians and Israelis equally deserve to live safely and securely and enjoy equal measures of freedom, prosperity and democracy.
News of the impending cease-fire came after mounting international pressure for an end to the violence between both sides.
No fewer than 230 Palestinians had been killed in the recent conflict, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, while 12 people in Israel had also been killed, according to reports.
