The United States is set to ban social media apps; TikTok and WeChat from Sunday, the 20th of September 2020.
The US department of commerce makes this move amidst recent allegations by President, Donald Trump of data misuse and spying through the app by the Chinese government, and proposed sale of the US arm of the app to US investors.
In a statement on Friday, the US commerce secretary, Wilbur Ross claimed the move was necessary, as the Chinese Communist Party has demonstrated the means and motives to use the apps to threaten national security, foreign policy and the economy of the US.
The ban on the messaging and payment platform, WeChat will take effect from Sunday, while existing users of the video app; TikTok will be able to continue using the app till November 12, although they will not be able to download new updates.
India has already banned both apps, as well as some other Chinese apps, claiming they were prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
