The World Health Organization has expressed regret over President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the agency, signed on his first day in office. Trump criticized the WHO for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and claimed the U.S. pays significantly more than China.
WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic emphasized the organization’s crucial role in global health and called for constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership. In response to the withdrawal, China pledged continued support for the WHO, with foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stating that the role of the WHO should only be strengthened, not weakened.
Experts warn that this withdrawal could weaken U.S. influence in global health initiatives and hinder efforts to combat future pandemics, as the U.S. is the largest financial supporter of the WHO.
