The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 27 persons in connection with the recent violent clashes in Umuchigbo-Nike, Enugu East LGA, which resulted in the killing of two brothers and the burning of several houses and vehicles.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, who visited the scenes of the attacks on Thursday, described the incident as “senseless, avoidable, and deeply regrettable.
He directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to commence a thorough and discreet investigation into the crisis.CP Giwa declared, “All those found culpable will be brought to justice. We have ordered a sustained manhunt for the fleeing suspects and will ensure that the law takes its full course.”
According to preliminary findings, the clashes stemmed from a long-standing leadership tussle that had divided the community.
The violence reportedly began on October 29, 2025, when two brothers were allegedly murdered by one faction, which triggered retaliatory attack the following day that saw five residential buildings and several vehicles set ablaze.
The CP further regretted, “This tragic loss of lives and destruction of property could have been avoided. We call on all sides to embrace dialogue, calm, and cooperate with security agencies.
The Police Commissioner also appealed to traditional rulers, community elders, and all stakeholders in Umuchigbo-Nike to support peace efforts and avoid further escalation of the conflict.
“I urge the warring factions to sheathe their swords and allow justice to prevail. Violence under any guise will not be tolerated in Enugu State.” CP Giwa said.
Police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed that normalcy has been restored, with officers maintaining strong presence in the community to prevent further unrest.
The Command reiterated its unwavering commitment to public safety and the protection of lives and property. SP Ndukwe added that those behind the criminal acts will not go unpunished.
The Command urged residents with useful information to assist investigators and reaffirmed its resolve to bring lasting peace to the community.
