Reports have it that five persons among the 112 detained defenceless residents of Obigbo (Oyigbo), Rivers State, held at the Nigerian Army’s Alpha Military Commando Base in Suleja, Niger State, have died.
They were among a total of 550 persons abducted from Obigbo in the wake of the October 2020 EndSARS protests in various parts of Nigeria.
Human rights research group, the International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law (Intersociety), made this known is a statement issued on Wednesday, 11th August, 2021.
According to Intersociety, the five who lost their lives were Thomas Ekwueme, Pius Onochie, Obinna Akapuru, Monday Ifeanyi and Tobechukwu Odoka.
The statement signed by the group’s principal officers, Emeka Umeagbalasi, Obianuju Igboeli and Chidimma Udegbunam, noted that 134 other abducted detainees were still missing.
With the deaths of the five detainees, according to Intersociety, the Army has released 107 mostly Igbo indigenes and residents of Obigbo.
The statement said their release followed a court bail granted to them recently and perfection of their bail conditions.
The 107 mostly Igbo Christian citizens of Obigbo residency have also successfully rejoined their families and other loved ones over nine months after they were waylaid by soldiers on their way to their legitimate businesses.
