National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC),has reported that more than 70% of the food exported from Nigeria is turned down by foreign countries.
The agency’s director-general, Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that the problem was resulting in significant financial losses for the exporters and the nation as a whole during the official launching of the new NAFDAC office complex at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
She claimed that if cooperation between NAFDAC and other governmental organizations at the ports is increased, the occurrence of food exports being rejected by other nations may soon become a thing of the past.
Adeyeye said that more than 70% of the goods that leave the ports are turned away and in a country like Nigeria, which is overwhelmingly dependent on importation, the duty to protect public health and the quality of imports cannot be carried out without the effective presence of NAFDAC at the ports and land borders.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the police were praised by the director general for their cooperative connection between management and the organization.
Adeyeye stated that NAFDAC, working with the port administrations, would make sure that exports of commodities are of the required quality and conform to importers’ legal criteria before they are released.
