Twenty-six persons perish in a boat mishap in Sokoto,

Twenty-six persons have been confirmed dead, while the search continues as a result of the boat capsizing on the Shagari River in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The chairman of the Shagari council area, Alhaji Aliyu Dantani, who disclosed the accident to the Newsmen, on Wednesday, in Sokoto, said the incident occurred on Tuesday evening.

Dantani said that 21 of the 26 recovered corpses, were women, while five were children.

The council chairman who said that the actual number of passengers in the boat could not be immediately ascertained added that a search and rescue mission was ongoing.

He further revealed that local divers were in the river to see how to either recover bodies or rescue survivors.
