Elders of the Awgbu community in Orumba North Council Area have appealed to the state government to assist in solving the town union crisis currently rocking the community.
The elders made the plea in a Press briefing yesterday, in Awka, expressing concern that the opposing faction had fixed the town union election to take place tomorrow.
The Chairman of the Elders Committee of Awgbu Progress Union, Chief Mike Izuegbune, in a statement presented by a member of the Committee, Chief Theophilus Okoli, said they want state government to allow Awgbu Progress Union conduct the elections of the National Officers of the union in accordance with the constitution of Awgbu Progress Union 2017, which the court upheld in suit number AG 109, 2021, between Mr Joseph Eze as the applicant and Joe Ndubisi Onwuchekwe and three others as the respondents.
According to them, the judgement of the court was delivered on 28th January, 2022.
They expressed dismay that despite a breech in the community’s constitution by an opposing faction, the state government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters was getting ready to conduct the town union election for the faction, which they described as illegal group.
They appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo to wade into the matter to forestall breakdown of law and order.
In his reaction, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Hon. Collins Nwabunwanne, denied allegations of trying to foist a leadership on the community.
He said that he had no interest in the election, except to make sure that the right thing was done and also to restore peace in all warring communities in line with Professor Chukwuma Soludo’s principle of justice, fairness, peace and tranquillity for the progress and development of the State.
Commissioner Nwabunwanne hinted that on assumption of duty, he observed that many communities were bedevilled by town union crises leading to setting up of Caretaker Committees, but that the present administration deemed it necessary to amicably resolve those crises and put in place, democratically elected town union executives.
He further disclosed that he held meetings with the warring parties where they all agreed to hold the election, adding that his office has, by so doing, resolved many town union disputes.
