The fear of extinction of Fulani herders have been raised by the Coalition of Pastoralists Associations of Nigeria, CPAN.
The group, at a press conference on Tuesday on Abuja alleged that the Nigerian state and other tribes are attempting to destroy cattle-rearing businesses and chase the Fulani away.
The CPAN members are Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria,MACBAN, Jonfe Jam Youth Development Association of Nigeria, among others.
Speaking at the event, the president of MACBAN Baba Othman Ngelzarma stated that the Nigerian government has not tried to recharge Lake Chad and make it habitable for their people but watch as the Fulanis are treated as irritants.
He also said that obnoxious laws are formulated by state governments as they ban open grazing without providing infrastructure for alternatives .
He lamented over the killings of herders and butchers in Rukubi village, last week and decried the silence of high ranking officials who didn’t bother to console the families affected.
They asked the Federal Government to investigate the killings against herders who are legitimately doing their businesses, punish offenders, compensate the victims’ families and disband militia targeting Fulanis.
