The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is threatening a nationwide strike following the police invitation of its President, Joe Ajaero, over allegations of terrorism financing and other serious offenses. The NLC is accusing the Federal Government of harassing its leaders, with the union’s Deputy President, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, announcing the potential strike after an emergency meeting in Abuja.
The police had summoned Ajaero to appear for questioning on Tuesday, warning that an arrest warrant would be issued if he failed to comply.
The NLC leadership condemns the allegations as politically motivated and a blatant attempt to stifle the voice of workers.
Unionists gathered at the NLC headquarters on Tuesday, singing solidarity songs.
The union said it has put its affiliates on alert and is ready to take all necessary actions to protect its leaders and the integrity of the labour movement.
