Residents of Ukpor, the headquarters of Nnewi South Local Government Area in Anambra State, protested on Friday over six years of power outages.

They gathered at the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) office, chanting slogans and holding placards demanding action. Messages on the placards included “EEDC, give us prepaid meters” and “No to EEDC darkness in Ukpor.”

The protesters accused EEDC of removing their transformers for refurbishment but returning only two of the five taken. They claimed that EEDC disconnected them from the industrial line and has been billing them despite the lack of service.

Mr. Nkwadochukwu Onwughalu, Chairman of the Ukpor Electricity Consumers Committee, criticized EEDC for allegedly neglecting the community. Another protester, Mr. Valentine Ifechigha, demanded the return of the transformers and prepaid meters.

EEDC Business District Manager, Evaristus Obeta, assured that he would escalate the issue but declined further comment on the specifics.
