Global human rights group, Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian government to avoid attacking and violating the rights of citizens who plan to protest at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos on Saturday stemming from the hashtag “OccupyLekkiTollGate” which has been trending online.

In a statement by Amnesty International, the group asked the government to respect and safeguard citizen’s right to protest calling on all Nigerian authorities to demonstrate commitment to protect the right to peaceful protest.

This comes after the Lagos State Government and Police issued stern warnings against any form of protest in the state by aggrieved Nigerians threatening to embark on another protest following the last weekend’s judgement of the Lagos Judicial panel to allow Lekki Concession Company regain possession and reopen the Lekki tollgate, a ruling that has since generated outrage on social media and has led to the youth representative on the panel pulling out of proceedings over claims that the panel would not grant justice to the case before it.

To make their voices heard, some Nigerians have announced plans to stage a protest at the tollgate on Saturday, February 13.
A move the Nigerian government and police have warned against.
