Health is wealth according to an age long axiom. It is therefore a worrying trend when a state as sophisticated as Anambra State is grappling with a healthcare delivery system on life support. In the past decade, Anambra State has witnessed a very stunted growth in the healthcare delivery system especially at the primary healthcare level.
There is no better pointer to the level of decadence in our primary healthcare system than when you visit the two teaching hospitals in Anambra State. The vast majority of cases in these tertiary hospitals are health issues such as malaria, typhoid and other common infectious diseases that are meant to be comfortably managed at primary healthcare centers in the communities or at most the general hospitals.
But you can’t blame the people because the few existing primary healthcare centers are barely functioning with no bed spaces, no laboratories for basic tests apart from strips for HIV and pregnancy tests. Many of these PHCs have leaking roofs and broken windows, with no mosquito nets to keep away the marauding mosquitoes. More than 90% of our existing primary healthcare centers do not have any resident Doctor or a Doctor on call with very inadequate number of trained nurses and midwives. The situation in our general hospitals are not much different either.
These and many other issues are what the Healthcare Transformation Plan of Dr. Chidozie Nwankwo who is the governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) will address. According to this plan, Dr. Chido has set out to renovate and upgrade ALL existing primary healthcare centers and general hospitals in Anambra State. This, according to Dr. Chidozie Nwankwo (Overdose), will involve reconstruction of the physical structures in these hospitals, furnishing of these hospitals with high quality hospital beds and stands, establishment of standard mini laboratories in the PHCs and full laboratories in the general hospitals equipped with all necessary reagents and equipment to carry out diagnostic tests.
Dr. Chidozie Nwankwo will also ensure constant supply of drugs and pharmaceutical products to the Drug Dispensaries of these hospitals and equally provide standby alternative power supply to all our hospitals as well as standard boreholes for supply of clean water. After the revamping of existing public health centers and hospitals, the next phase will involve the establishment of new health centers in some communities to further bring access to quality basic healthcare closer to the grassroot. More Doctors, Nurses and Laboratory Scientists will be deployed to these hospitals especially in the under-served hinterlands.
The driving force behind this Healthcare Transformation Plan is the burning desire by Dr. Chidozie Nwankwo to ensure universal access to basic health services to every Anambrarian no matter where they live. This is a critical part of the AAC manifesto and one promise that Dr. Chidozie Nwankwo will surely deliver.
