The African Development Bank has revealed that wheat demand in Africa has surged to over 75 million metric tonnes, underscoring the need for strategic investments in the sector.
This was a key discussion point at the ongoing West and Central Africa Wheat Summit 2024, held in Abuja.
During his keynote address, AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, represented by Dr. Abdul Kamara, highlighted the transformative role of technology in agriculture.
He emphasized that innovations like mechanization, advanced farming techniques, and high-yield crops could address challenges such as climate change and post-harvest losses.
Dr. Adesina warned that over 80% of wheat in West and Central Africa is imported, undermining food security and economic stability.
He pointed to Nigeria’s progress toward national wheat self-sufficiency as a positive step.
The summit aims to drive policy reforms and boost investment in wheat production to secure sustainable food security and economic growth for the region.
