The Umuowelle in village Agulu, Aniocha local government Area of Anambra state, has raised alarm over gully erosion that is ravaging and sweeping away homes and farmlands in the area. The area is known as Ugwu Igbo adi-is, a by-pass from Nwagu Agulu axis to St Mathias Catholic church in Umuowelle village.
The President General of the community, Chief Oliver Ahamefuna, who visited the area on Sunday October 2nd with some members of executives and kpakpando correspondent Udoka Nwokoye, said the gully erosion has made residents of the area and ndi Agulu in general live in constant fear.
The President General explained that the gully developed as a result of quacks that had handled the construction job ab nitio until Distinguished Senator Uche Ekwunife took over the project , which he noted that the Senator has completed the road project by 80% from St Mathias Catholic church junction to the failing portion of the road.
Chief Ahamefuna equally hinted that he is sure that Senator Uche Ekwunife has fulfilled her side of the obligations with regards to completing the road project, therefore urging the Contractor assigned to finish the job to get his men and equipments ready so as to swung into action and finish the project once dry season sets in.
He commended senator Ekwunife for quality job she is done already from St Mathias benchmark, assuring her that people of Umuowelle and entire Agulu is pleased with her commitment towards completing the construction.
Also speaking, the chairman of the Village Chief Ozoemena Owo appealed for calm and patience, assuring the residents that Senator Ekwunife has promised that work will commence on the road immediately the wet season stopped, commending the President General for committing his personal reasources to assisting those displaced by the gully and to the youth leader of the village for their community-based efforts and commitments towards curbing expansion of the gully.
A residents of the area, Mr Onyeka Anyaoke said he can not acces his compound again as his house is completely cut off by the gully as a result created a hole through the fence so that he can smuggle his children in and out of the house to change their school uniform etc.
Further contributing, The Village woman leader, Mrs Victoria Okoye explained that there are many sick and elderly men and women resident in the area that need constant medical attention but can not be relocaed becuase no vehicle nor motorcycle can access their various houses urging the Senator including the state government to expedite actions that will lead to a permanent solution.
