Hundreds of protesters from Akwa Ibom State gathered outside the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Friday, demanding justice for the death of 23-year-old Asher Christopher. Asher reportedly died on Tuesday under unclear circumstances within the NNPC premises on Moscow Road.
Despite heavy rain, the protesters blocked the entrance to the NNPC, displaying signs that read, “We want explanation on Asher’s death” and “Who killed Asher?” The protestors, led by King Albert, Coordinator of the Akwa Ibom community in Rivers State, expressed frustration over the company’s silence and alleged that the NNPC has withheld Asher’s body from his family.
Albert called on the Rivers State Government and other authorities to intervene, demanding an autopsy and access to Asher’s body, insisting that justice must be served.
The Akwa Ibom State Government is also reportedly aware of the situation and is expected to get involved.
