Traditional rulers in Anambra State have warned the youths to eschew all forms of electoral violence such as thuggery, ballot box snatching etc. during the governorship election billed for November 6, this year.

The Traditional rulers stated this during their monthly Meeting at the Government House, Awka.

In his submission, the Chairman, Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, and the traditional ruler of Onitsha, Obi Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, represented by the Deputy Chairman of the Council, Igwe Sunday Okafor of Okpuno town in Awka South Council Areas, maintained that as the Governorship Election draws near, it is pertinent that families educate their young ones on the need to shun violence and avoid being used as political thugs

He cautioned youths to realize that life is lived only once and should not be wasted.

Also making their feelings known, the traditional rulers of Nnewi, Igwe Kenneth Orizu, Igwe Pius Omachonu of Olumbanasaa, Igwe Colonel Onebunne of Akwaihedi and his Isseke counterpart, igwe Emma Nnabuife, called the attention of the youths to realize that same politicians who use them as political thugs, send their own children abroad to be educated in the best schools while using other people’s children as thugs.

They harped on the need for youths to ensure that they exercise their franchise during the election in peaceful and orderly manner as well as shun acts that could drag the name of their families and state to the mud.

Also making their feelings known, the traditional rulers of Enugwu Ukwu, Igwe Raph Ekpe, Igwe Christopher Okpala of Akwaeze, the traditional ruler of Umuoba Anam, Igwe George Ekwealor, igwe Clifford Okeke of Nawfija and his Enugwu Umuoyia counterpart, Igwe Peter Ezeamama, urged youths to troop out en masse and vote in the Candidate of their choice rather than be instrument of violence, as according to them, violence does no one any good.

The Royal Fathers noted that the most painful aspect is that after assisting the politicians to achieve their aims, they brand such youths as thugs without making provision to engage them in productive ventures.

They also seized the opportunity to advise politicians, National Assembly members to amend relevant laws and party structures to enhance the access of young people into political offices.

The traditional rulers further cautioned Politicians to adopt the spirit of sportsmanship and accept defeat when they lose as election is not do or die affair.
