Anambra Govt Demolishes Illegal Structures In Onitsha, Other Places

Anambra State joint taskforce has pulled down illegal attachment structures and shops in Marine Modern Market, Onitsha, Onitsha South LGA.

The team, led by officials of State Physical Planning Board arrived at the market, located at Gohehol Avenue Marine Modern Market, Onitsha, to stop action of unidentified developers indiscriminately erecting structures and shops in the market.

The Taskforce also demolished an illegal structure built by youths of Ogbunike which blocked the original waterways, thereby causing high level of erosion and destruction of property in the area.

The exercise also witnessed partial demolition at the Airport Road where another developer was erecting perimeter fencing and structures without mapping out the required distance from the road.

Also visited was Azu Ogbunike in Oyi LGA, where a construction firm converted a road project that is supposedly dual carriage, into a narrow road.

It was noted that the Taskforce had served stop-work notices to the developers, but they remained adamant.

Reacting, leader of the Taskforce, Barr. Chike Mmaduekwe, said that the developer, had been severally warned to stop work, but remained recalcitrant and went about attaching structures to old ones which is contrary to the law of the State.

He appealed to developers in the State to support government in developing the State, by adhering to building codes.

Maduekwe warned, “From henceforth, any developer caught carrying out unapproved structures such as blocking waterways and erecting of unapproved structures will be made to face the full weight of the law,”

Landlord at the Onitsha Marine Market, Chief Raymond Edozie, condemned the action of the unidentified builder who had been erecting unapproved structures around the area.
