Anambra Indigenes Canvass Enhanced Welfare Package For Workers

The Awka Zonal Vice Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Basil Dim, has advocated one hundred thousand naira minimum wage for workers in the state.

Dr. Dim in his message to workers in the state on this Year’s Workers Day celebration, urged government’s implementation of the wage in view of the harsh economic realities in the country.

According to the NMA deputy boss, doctors salaries in the public service should be augmented by two hundred or three hundred percent in view of their strategic profession which demands proper remuneration.

He pressed that doctors should be insulated from their vulnerability of insecurity in Nigeria and should be provided with the enabling environment to practice their profession to the best of their ability.

In all, Dr. Dim is of the opinion that the present salaries of workers in the state and the nation at large are not taking them home and, should therefore, be enhanced to step up their productivity.

On his part, the traditional ruler of Enugwu Ukwu, Igwe Ralph Ekpeh, enjoined civil servants in Nigeria to be revolutionary in the pursuit of their welfare.

According to Igwe Ekpeh, workers should stop pressing for enhanced minimum wage because even if it is enhanced, it will equate with what legislators and political office holders in the country earn.

He therefore advocated a cut in their salaries and allowances by one quarter and its implementation to be monitored to its logical conclusion.

In a related development, an Isi Achina community leader, Chief Joseph Nwakpadolu, called for enhanced welfare package for workers in Nigeria.

In their separate reactions, a former Awka Zonal Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Johnson Ezedinachi, a Priest of the Awka Catholic Diocese, Very Rev. Monsignor Professor John Paul Nzomiwu, an Awka based legal expert, Chief Uba Anene, and Amawbia based legal expert, Chief Chike Oranye, expect enhanced welfare packages for workers in line with the nation’s inflationary trend, while some Nnamdi Azikiwe University lecturers, Prof, Vivian Nwogbo, Dr. Francisca Nnajiofor and Dr. Osinachi Okoroafor, also pressed that the welfare of workers in Nigeria should actually be enhanced.
