The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Anambra State Command, says it arrested 559 suspected drug offenders, secured 128 convictions, and seized approximately 1.8 tonnes of assorted illicit drugs within the last 11 months as part of its intensified campaign against drug trafficking and substance abuse in the state.
The State Commander, Charles Onubogu, who disclosed this in Awka, added that intelligence-driven operations also led to the dismantling of several drug trafficking networks and notorious drug joints across Anambra State, significantly disrupting illicit drug activities.
He further revealed that the command has counselled, treated, and rehabilitated 102 individuals battling drug addiction, while also expanding its public enlightenment campaigns across schools, markets, churches, and communities to discourage substance abuse, particularly among young people.
According to him, the sustained enforcement and advocacy efforts have resulted in a noticeable reduction in open drug abuse in many parts of the state, with residents commending the agency for restoring order in areas previously known for rampant illicit drug activities.
NDLEA, Anambra State Commander, attributed the achievements to the support of the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), as well as the cooperation of sister security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and members of the public who continue to provide timely and credible intelligence.
During the interactive session, members of the newly elected NUJ executive sought clarification on the agency’s strategies for tackling the growing involvement of youths in substance abuse.
On how the Command is tackling the increasing rate of drug abuse and addiction among the youths, Commander Onubogu emphasized that the fight against illicit drugs requires collective responsibility, describing the media as a critical partner in educating the public and discouraging substance abuse.
He called for collective effort in exposing drug trafficking networks and intensify public enlightenment on dangers of illicit drug use to strengthen ongoing efforts to curb the menace.
