Anambra state government has inaugurated a committee to rehabilitate youths who have become addicted to crystal methamphetamine.
This was made known by the Commissioner for health, Dr Vincent Okpala when he met with traditional rulers at Government House, Awka.
He said that the committee is made up of health experts, psychologists, officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA and Nigeria Police Force and also all traditional heads so as to enable the committee to work effortlessly.
He also stated that following the prevalence of crystal meth, popularly known as mkpulummiri, most communities adopted special sanctions for abusers of the drug, which involved flogging. The method, he noted was not only unhealthy but caused the death of some of such youths.
To that effect, he said that the rehabilitation would be purely professional and won’t involve merciless flogging of the abusers of the substance.
