Anambra State Sports Commission Upholds Employee Rights Amidst Controversy
In a recent turn of events, the Anambra State Sports Development Commission has vehemently opposed the Anambra State Football Association’s decision to suspend Chijioke Onyedika, a dedicated staff member of the Sports Commission. The Association’s move, described by the Commission as misguided and baseless, prompted a swift response from the Commission, asserting Onyedika’s rights and clarifying his role within the organization.
The controversy arose when the Football Association, in a letter to Onyedika, not only questioned the legitimacy of sports competitions organized by the Commission but also banned him from participating in any football activities and entering football arenas in the state for a period of five years, under the threat of arrest.
In a strongly-worded statement, Patrick-Estate Onyedum, Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission, clarified that Chijioke Onyedika is an esteemed member of the Commission, duly authorized to act on behalf of the state government in various capacities. The Chairman emphasized that the Football Association lacked the authority to curtail Onyedika’s rights or prevent his access to football facilities within the state.
Commission highlighted that the Football Association’s action was an unwarranted attack on their authority and a clear violation of the Commission’s Establishment Law of 2018, which grants them the power to drive sports development at grassroots and amateur levels.
In response to the Football Association’s letter, the Commission issued a demand for the withdrawal of the suspension within 48 hours and an unreserved apology. The apology is expected to be published in two national dailies and online. The Commission, along with numerous other key stakeholders, awaits the Association’s response, indicating that their course of action will be determined based on this reply.
This incident serves as a testament to the Anambra State Sports Development Commission’s unwavering commitment to upholding the rights of its employees and ensuring the smooth operation of sports activities within the state.
