Traditional Rulers in Anambra State have restated commitment towards ending Female Genitals Mutilation in their communities.

The traditional rulers of Umu-Oba Anam in Anambra West Council Area, Igwe George Ekwealor, and that of Ukwalla, Igwe Joseph Ajodo, also Anambra West LGA, stated this at a one-day awareness campaign to end Harmful Traditional Practices and Female Genital Mutilation held at Conference Hall, Government House, Awka

The traditional rulers expressed their readiness to ensure zero tolerance as it concerns those harmful traditional practices in their Communities.

The traditional rulers stressed that those practices need to be eliminated in communities as they are unhealthy for development and also violate human rights.

They promised to help promote campaigns on zero tolerance to harmful traditional practices using grassroots mobilization of Umu Adas, opinion leaders, Clans heads and Presidents-General to help address the ugly development.

The traditional rulers who condemned Female genital cutting in its entirety hinted that female genital circumcision can cause death or health problems as well as severe pains.

In their separate speeches, the State Coordinator, Rule of Law and Anti Corruption Programmes, Mrs Josephine Onah, and Mrs Loveth Onyendilefu, explained that Female circumcision is a procedure performed on women or girls to alter or injure their genitalia for non-medical reasons and performed without anaesthetic under septic condition by the practitioners with little or no knowledge of human anatomy or medicine.

The resource persons further posited that practitioners see female Genital circumcision as an integral part of cultural and ethnic identity, while some perceive it as a religious obligation.

They further considered the practice of female Genital mutilation as detrimental to Woman health and well being while others consider it as a ritualized form of child abuse and violence against women, a violation of Human rights.
