Defending champions Argentina survived a major scare to defeat Egypt 3-2 in a dramatic FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 encounter at Atlanta Stadium on Monday night.

The South Americans were pushed to the brink by a spirited Egyptian side that twice held the lead before a late Argentine surge secured qualification to the quarter-finals.

Egypt stunned the football world in the 15th minute when defender Yasser Ibrahim rose highest to put the Pharaohs ahead, silencing the majority of the crowd and raising hopes of a historic upset.

Argentina were handed a golden opportunity to respond just five minutes later after being awarded a penalty. However, captain Lionel Messi failed to convert, with Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed El Shobeir producing an excellent save to deny the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. The miss marked Messi’s second penalty failure of the tournament and left Argentina trailing as Egypt continued to frustrate the defending champions.

Despite dominating possession and creating several opportunities, Argentina struggled to find a breakthrough against Egypt’s disciplined defensive setup throughout much of the contest.

The North Africans looked increasingly confident as the game progressed and doubled their advantage in the 67th minute through Mostafa Ziko, sending Egyptian fans into celebration and leaving Argentina facing a potential World Cup exit.

With their title defence hanging by a thread, Argentina mounted a relentless comeback.

The fightback began in the 79th minute when Cristian Romero pulled one back to inject life into Lionel Scaloni’s side.Just four minutes later, Messi redeemed himself for his earlier penalty miss, finding the net in the 83rd minute to level the score at 2-2 and spark wild celebrations among Argentine supporters.

With extra time looming, Argentina completed the turnaround deep into stoppage time when Enzo Fernández struck in the 93rd minute to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory.

The late winner crushed Egyptian hopes of producing one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history and ensured Argentina’s journey in the tournament would continue.

For Egypt, the defeat was heartbreaking after a courageous performance that pushed the defending champions to their limits. Mohamed El Shobeir’s penalty save and the team’s resilience throughout the match earned widespread admiration despite the result.

Argentina, meanwhile, advance to the quarter-finals after surviving one of their toughest tests of the tournament, with Messi once again playing a decisive role despite his early setback.

The victory keeps alive Argentina’s dream of retaining the World Cup crown, while Egypt leave the competition with their heads held high after a memorable display against one of football’s biggest powers.
