The Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU) Owerri Zone, has described as unacceptable the delay in implementation of its 2025 agreement with the federal government.
It listed a number of unresolved issues, noting that government inaction could lead to disruption in the academic system.
Addressing a press conference at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, the ASUU Owerri Zone Coordinator, Prof Dennis Aribodor, criticized distorted manner of implementation of the agreement in some universities.
“Our apprehension is predicated on government’s failure to inaugurate the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) expected to shield the agreement from bureaucratic bottlenecks and guide its strategic actualisation.
“So far, the federal government agents have implemented it in a distorted and an uncoordinated manner, while very few state governments have embraced and implemented aspects of the agreement”
While calling on federal and state governments to respect the spirit of the agreement, he insisted that its major components including Consolidated Academic Tool Allowances, Earned Academic Allowances should be addressed.
“We are therefore raising the alarm and calling on all critical stakeholders to urge governments to ensure the faithful implementation of the agreement”
ASUU noted that implementing the agreement and addressing other contending issues would avert industrial disharmony as well as disruption in the university system.
