Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has called on the Federal Government to enact legislation banning open grazing across Nigeria.
Speaking at the Benue Livestock Summit 2025 in Makurdi, Governor Alia emphasized that ranching is the only globally accepted method of animal husbandry and urged the Minister of Livestock Development to lead efforts in passing such legislation.
He reaffirmed Benue’s commitment to its Prohibition of Open Grazing and Ranches Establishment Law and revealed plans to expand livestock infrastructure, establish feed mills, hatcheries, and training centres to boost the sector.
Governor Alia said livestock development holds significant potential to combat food insecurity, generate wealth, and strengthen Nigeria’s economy.
