The President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, has pardoned everyone convicted of the federal offence of marijuana possession.
In a statement on his official Twitter handle on Thursday, Biden also called on state governors to do the same.
According to the statement, Biden is pardoning all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession adding that there are thousands of people who were previously convicted of simple possession who may be denied employment, housing, or educational opportunities as a result. He state that this pardon will remove this burden.
Mr Biden also called on governors to pardon simple state marijuana possession offenses explaining that just as no one should be in a federal prison solely for possessing marijuana, no one should be in a local jail or state prison for that reason, either.
He further stated that sending people to jail for possessing marijuana has upended too many lives – for conduct that is legal in many states.
