
Four new sports have been approved in the Olympic for inclusion at the 2024 Paris Games.
Apart from Breakdancing, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing have already been added to the programme for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will hold in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, the introduction of Breaking was one of the results of the Olympic Agenda 2020 . He said the priority was to introduce sports that are particularly popular among the younger generation and also take into consideration the urbanisation of sport.
Breakdancing, grew up alongside hip hop in the South Bronx of New York in the 1970s. Its official sports term is breaking and it appeared at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, in the form of head to head battles.
Russia’s Sergei Chernyshev won the first Breakdancing gold medal for boys in the event and Japan’s Ramu Kawai took home the girls’ title.
While reacting, Shawn Tay , president of the World Dance Sport Federation said they are proud to have been included at Paris 2024. He said they would redouble their efforts to make the breaking competition at the Paris Olympic Games memorable
