On the Foreign Scene
Canada has elected Mark Carney as Prime Minister in a dramatic federal vote that saw his Liberal Party return to power with a minority government. Speaking early Tuesday in Ottawa, Carney declared that Canada will never yield to President Trump’s threats, referring to steep U.S. tariffs and sovereignty challenges.
The Liberals secured 169 seats, just shy of a majority, while Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre not only lost the election but also his long-held seat. Carney, a former central banker, ran on a strong anti-Trump platform and promised unity and protection of Canadian interests.
World leaders have congratulated Carney, including President Trump, with both sides agreeing to meet soon.
