Lawmakers in the House of Representatives, under the G-60 group, have called for the trial of 23 former local government chairmen in Rivers State for alleged treason.
The group, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere, representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency, made this demand at a press conference in Abuja.
The former council chairmen, loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, are accused of trying to retain their positions after their three-year term expired. The lawmakers urged the Rivers State government to charge the former chairmen and their sponsors with treason.
They commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Rivers State citizens for resisting the takeover attempt and highlighted the legal provisions against such acts. The judiciary was also urged to remain vigilant against any unlawful attempts to seize government institutions.
