A Chinese national, Geng Quandong, has been sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Buhari, in Kano State. The Kano State High Court handed down the verdict after finding Mr. Quandong guilty of culpable homicide.
The court heard that the tragic incident occurred in September 2022 at Janbalu quarters, allegedly due to the victim’s refusal to marry him after purportedly exploiting him.
Geng Quandong, aged 47, faced charges of culpable homicide following the death of his girlfriend, Ummukulsum Buhari, aged 23. The prosecution presented six witnesses and four exhibits, leading to the conviction.
However, the judge recommended mercy on behalf of the convict to the Kano State Governor. The defense argued self-defense, with Mr. Quandong stating that he stabbed the victim unintentionally during a confrontation.
The sentencing has sparked mixed reactions, with the victim’s mother expressing satisfaction with the court’s decision.
