Millions of Cubans are enduring their third consecutive day without power as Hurricane Oscar nears the island. The Cuban Electrical Union reported that only 16% of the country had power restored before the aging energy grid failed again on Saturday.
Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy confirmed that 52,000 workers are attempting to restore service, but efforts are hampered by the hurricane’s arrival. Oscar made landfall in the Bahamas with sustained winds of 80 mph and is expected to hit northeastern Cuba later today.
The ongoing power crisis, exacerbated by recent blackouts, has left many residents struggling for basic necessities like food and water. The Cuban government has canceled classes and advised non-essential workers to stay home as the storm approaches, while officials blame the energy crisis on a mix of sanctions and infrastructure issues.
