Death Toll In Jigawa Tanker Explosion Rises To 105
The death toll in the tanker explosion that occurred at Taura LGA of Jigawa State on Wednesday, has risen to 105.
The number of the injured persons has also risen to 70.
Earlier reports had it that no fewer than 94 persons died on the spot when the incident occurred, while 50 others sustained various degrees of injuries.
In a statement, the Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the Jigawa State Command, DSP. Lawan Shiisu Adam, said findings revealed that the explosion was caused by petrol that leaked from the tanker into a gutter.
He said that the disaster was triggered when residents rushed to collect spilt petrol after the tanker overturned.
According to the PPRO, the incidence occurred at about 11:30 PM on Tuesday in Majia Town when the tanker driver lost control near Khadija University.
He described the scene as a “horrific tragedy,” emphasizing the need for the public to understand the risks associated with scooping fuel from accident scenes.
The PRO stated that the tanker was en route from Kano State to Nguru town in Yobe State when the driver lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the explosion.

“Unfortunately, villagers attempted to scoop petrol from the drainage, resulting in a flame that engulfed the area and many people reportedly perished.”
He noted that 105 corpses have been evacuated, while 70 injured persons were rushed to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for medical attention.
The fire was successfully extinguished through the combined efforts of police officers, firefighters and members of the Public.
DSP Adam disclosed that the authorities organized a mass burial for the victims on Wednesday morning, with the entire community mourning the loss
