The Medical Director of Zion Hospital and Maternity, Nawfia, Dr. Oliver Onwughalu, has urged the citizenry to be environment friendly to achieve a livable and prosperous society.
Dr. Onwughalu in a press statement endorsing Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s reintroduction of compulsory environment sanitation every last Saturday of the month, recommended penalties for defaulters.
According to the Medical expert, defaulters who live in filthy environments and others who flout sanitation laws should be penalized to serve as deterrent to others.
He noted that dirty environment is the major cause of preventable and contagious illnesses and deaths.
Identifying environmental neglects as major problem in society, Dr. Onwughalu cited Abakaliki town which he visited recently as a model for other states to emulate.
He regretted that some affluent residents of Onitsha neglect their environment even when their financial capacity can drive keeping their environment clean.
On the ongoing wind of change blowing across the Federation, Dr. Onwughalu noted that Peter Obi’s political philosophy should be imbibed to pull Nigerians out of the present socio-economic doldrums they are facing.
