Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had suspended Mali’s membership.

The West African regional Bloc took the action on Sunday, 30th May 2021, in response to last week’s coup .

According to report, leaders of the 15 – member ECOWAS held an emergency summit meeting in Accra, Ghana.

In a communique made public after the summit, ECOWAS suspended Mali’s membership with immediate effect. It did not announce sanctions against Mali nor did it call for new interim President Assimi Goita to step down.

ECOWAS, however declared that a new civilian prime minister should be nominated and a new inclusive government formed to proceed with the transition programme .

The leaders demanded that the Feburary 22nd 2022 which has been previously slated for the presidential election be maintained.

Interim President, Colonel Goita who led the coup, both in August, against President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and last week, against the Interim President, was present at the summit but gave no immediate response.

Recall that 38 year old Goita, last week, arrested interim President Bah Ndaw and his Prime Minister Moctar Ouane and got them to resign while in detention before releasing them.

According to the Reuters, the political crisis in Mali calls for concern as ECOWAS and the Western Powers fear it could aggravate the instability in Northern and Central Mali, a home base for regional affiliates of Al Qaeda and Islamic state.
