Lawyers in the Enugu North District expressed their dissatisfaction on Tuesday through a protest against the extended use of online court sittings by High Court judges over the past two years.

Representatives from the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) branches in Nsukka and Obollo-Afor gathered at their respective high courts, obstructing roads and voicing grievances through solidarity chants.

Sonny Okoro, NBA Nsukka branch chairperson, and Desmond Ezema, NBA Obollo-Afor branch chairperson, addressed reporters during the protest, highlighting challenges caused by the prolonged absence of physical court proceedings.

Okoro emphasized challenges arising from makeshift virtual court setups due to inadequate visual facilities. Lawyers expressed concern over disruptions caused by directing litigants to travel to Enugu for court appearances, citing insecurity along the Enugu-Ugwogonike-Opi Nsukka Road.

The lawyers said that despite appeals to judicial authorities, including Chief Judge Justice Raymond Ozoemena, the situation remains unresolved. They urged the Enugu State Government to intervene, warning of a potential boycott of court proceedings if the issue persists.

Desmond Ezema echoed the plea for intervention, highlighting the difficulties faced by lawyers and litigants in the district due to the prolonged absence of physical court sessions.
