The Enugu State Government has announced its goal to pay salaries solely from Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), eliminating reliance on federal allocations.
Speaking at the 49th Annual Synod of the Enugu Archdiocese of the Methodist Church, the Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing revenue earnings and boosting the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Onyia reassured residents that there would be no increase in taxes. Instead, the focus is on closing revenue loopholes and ensuring compliance among businesses.
He urged both individuals and the private sector to contribute directly to government coffers by paying their taxes promptly.
He said that the government’s objective is clear, which is to achieve financial autonomy and ensure sustainability in meeting its obligations without relying on federal allocations. As part of its infrastructure development plans, the state aims to provide piped water to most parts of the capital city within the next 40 days, along with completing major road construction projects.
Meanwhile, the Methodist Archbishop of Enugu Diocese, Christopher Edeh, commended the government’s achievements in its first 10 months in office. He advised the government to review its tax collection methods, particularly to alleviate the burden on Small and Medium Entrepreneurs.
