Ethiopia's conflict spills over border as thousands flee - CGTN

The deadly conflict between Ethiopia and it’s Northern Region Tigray has spilled over borders.

It was reported that on Tuesday, more than 3000 people fled into Sudan as the Tigray regional leader accused Eritrea of attacking the region at the request of Ethiopia’s federal government.
It was reported that the head of the refugee agency in Sudan’s Kassala province , Sir Khalid told news men that they had received 3,500 refugees including women and children , with others on their way.

According to reports, Ethiopia’s Nobel Prize Peace Winning Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed waged a military offence against Tigray after it claimed that the Northern Region attacked a Government Military Base.

Tigray is almost completely cut off from the world nearly a week after its Communications were severed and according to an annoymous diplomat, hundreds of people have been reported killed on both sides of the conflict.

Following the violence and killings, international bodies have since pleaded with the Prime Minister to tow the path of dialogue but all to no avail.

Prime Minister Ahmed instead is using force to arrest the leaders of the regional government it regards as illegal and destroy its well stocked arsenal .

The African Union Commission Chairman, Moussa Faki Mahamat has also called for immediate ceasefire and in a Statement, he said the African Union , based in Ethiopia, is ready to support an inter- Ethiopian effort in the pursuit of peace and stability.

Abiy has described his Government’s military campaign against Tigray as law enforcement operations and said that it will soon end as soon as the criminal junta is disarmed , legitimate administration in the region restored and fugitives apprehended and bought to Justice.

According to reports , The Tigray Peoples Liberation Front ( TPLF) once dominated Ethiopia’s ruling coalition. They felt marginalized by Abiy’s political reforms when he took over in 2018 and broke away last year as the Prime Minister sought to transform the coalition into a single Prosperity Party. In September, the TPLF defied the federal government by holding a local election.
