The Executive Secretary, Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA), Dr Chioma Ezenyimulu, has cautioned Ndi Anambra against indiscriminate disposal of waste in communities.

Dr Ezenyimulu stated this during an interview with newsmen at the ASPHCDA office complex, in Awka.

She informed that improper waste disposal affects lives of people in such communities in various ways which can result to ill health.

She noted also that indiscriminate wastes disposed exposes the community to pathogens as they form breeding grounds for different diseases.

“An example of this is Malaria, where the vector; the mosquito, breeds on stagnant water.

“During rainy season, stagnant water on refuse and bushes form breeding grounds for mosquitoes, houseflies, rats and other vectors, causing Illnesses like Malaria, Diarrhoea, Gastroenteritis, Cholera and Dysentry.”

The Executive Secretary advocated clean environment, urging the people to always cut their grasses and keep their environment clean.

She commended efforts of the state government in ensuring a clean and healthy Anambra State.

“In ensuring we win the fight against Malaria, the state government has flagged-off the Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) distribution, which will commence from the second week of August, 2022.

“The nets will be distributed from household to household, the way we carry out our Immunisation campaigns.

“We have over 3.8 million ITNs to be shared in the state. These were donated by the Malaria Consortium, an NGO working in partnership with the Federal Government’s Malaria Elimination Programme.

“These nets will be shared to all households in Anambra, so everyone in the state is assured of getting ITNs once distribution commences,” Dr Ezenyimulu stressed. (MOI)
