The Federal Ministry of Education has clarified that it has not barred students under 18 from taking the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or the National Examinations Council (NECO) exams.

Minister of State for Education Dr. Yusuf Sununu addressed misconceptions at an event marking the 2024 International Literacy Day, explaining that recent comments by Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman about age guidelines for tertiary education were misinterpreted.

Sununu emphasized that while there are few exceptions, such as exceptionally talented younger students, the ministry is working on guidelines to ensure fair evaluation without hindering opportunities.

He also highlighted the importance of literacy and multilingual education in fostering peace and development, supported by initiatives like the Education for Renewed Hope roadmap and multilingual education programs.
