The Federal Government has disbursed over 330 billion naira in cash transfers to poor and vulnerable Nigerians.
Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, made the disclosure while briefing journalists in Abuja yesterday.
He explained that the payments are part of President Bola Tinubu’s social protection programme, aimed at helping citizens cope with rising prices caused by subsidy removal and exchange rate reforms.
Edun revealed that about 19.7 million households — representing over 70 million individuals — are listed on the National Social Register. Of these, 8.5 million households have already received at least one tranche of the 25,000 naira transfer.
Beneficiaries were identified using their National Identity Numbers, and payments were made digitally through bank accounts and mobile wallets, to ensure transparency.
The Minister added that the remaining households would be paid before the end of the year.
He also announced that provisions for the programme would be included in the annual national budget to make it sustainable.
Meanwhile, the National Coordinator of the Social Safety-net Office, Funmi Olotu, clarified that some beneficiaries received multiple payments, because the President insisted on linking disbursements to NIN for accountability.
